Back Again

I’m back from Japan and Hong Kong. The flight back was really turbulent, and for the first time, I tried to sleep while fully laid out on a stretch of four seats. I thought it would be pretty comfy, but then some major turbulence started up and instead of sleeping I just got tossed up and down for 20 minutes.

The good thing was that the flight wasn’t full, and for me, that means one thing - plenty of vacant bathrooms. There’s so much peace of mind knowing you can take a leak whenever you want to. I fully kicked back, and I tried my best to emulate those in first class by drinking all the water and soda I wanted. I just pretended the water and soda were champagne, that the plastic cups were crystal flutes, and my plastic armrest was made of gold.

One thing cool about our airplane was that it had a camera on the front of it, so we could watch the takeoff and landing on the main movie screen. Before takeoff, I kept thinking it would be awesome if the screen flashed “Press Start to Begin” and then have a choice for one or two players.

I miss being surrounded by all Asians. On this trip, I started wondering about my prior claims that my ideal living area would be at least moderately socially and ethnically diverse. I think that could be a partial lie. I think I only like diversity if it means being surrounded by “good” people of different backgrounds and racial makeups. If I’m surrounded by a diverse group of losers and jerks, I think I’d rather be surrounded by a homogenous group of polite Asians.

My two big trips to Croatia, Italy, Japan and Hong Kong, I think I’m going to start drinking more cold green tea (Japan), be on the lookout for the smaller and tastier ‘Chinese ‘ chickens at restaurants (Hong Kong), drink more drinks that include cold watermelon juice (Hong Kong), eat more Nutella (Italy), and once in a while eat a lot of deli meat for breakfast (Croatia).

Right now, I’m really craving some good American food and some sushi. I also want to watch the first new episode of The Office.

One step closer to achieving my dream of a custom made suit.  Hong Kong still smells terrible.   The view from the Star Ferry and the Peak are very nice at night.

Hong Kong

In Hong Kong right now.  The motherland.

It’s ultra humid, it’s smelly, it rained super hard on the first day (my first Asian mini typhoon), everyone speaks Cantonese, everything is smashed together (the people, the buildings, the cars), I saw my first Hong Kong car accident, had some genuine Chinese food, including wonton noodle soup, took a mini tour of the city, went to the Peak, went to Stanley Market, the Aberdeen area, including the Jumbo Floating Restaurant, Causeway Bay, Victoria Park, the Hong Kong Library, rode the subway (MTR), and walked the harbour (I’m going to use the British spelling for the time being).

Kyoto

Spent a hectic day riding the buses in Kyoto trying to get from Kiyomizu Temple to Ginkakuji to Kinkajui while stuffing a lunch courtesy of Lawson.

Mom likes Kyoto lots.  Dad would probably like it better if they had an HMV.

I currently am in possession of way too many Nintendo DS Lite styluses.

Things I Like About Japan

- The Japanese food is good

- The Italian food is good

- Their pastries are good

- Everyone drops everything to say hello and thanks to you when you go into a store

- The electronics section of every place is so neat and so advanced
- Every public message is summarized by a cute and funny cartoon image

- Almost no one has B.O. here

- They invented C.C. Lemon

- They do such a good job of wrapping everything, like crackers or candies

- Everything is clean here

- Everyone seems to take so much pride in their jobs

- Uniqlo is cheap

- Saying the phrase “bullet train” sounds really cool

- Japanese youth are so entertaining
- The conversion rate from yen to dollars is easy

- Japanese guys don’t have too much protruding nose hair (can’t say the same about Chinese guys)

BINGO!!!!!!!!!!

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin at 2:23 am on Monday, September 11, 2006

Today Andrew and I went back to Bic Camera to buy a Sony T10, Sony’s new digital camera that is not yet available in the states. It’s got something called “double image stabilization” and a really high iso, which could be great for concert photos. Anyway, we went to the store and went to the camera section. I flagged down a salesman and asked him if the camera interface could be changed into English. He fiddled with it and told us that the T10 was Japanese-only (English wasn’t an option).

With that out, I decided to go down to the B2 video game level to get a few pen styluses for the Nintendo DS Lite. When we got down there, we realized that they had an “overseas model” section for their cameras, and they had an English-ready T10. The problem was, the price was higher than that of the Japanese model, so we weren’t sure whether to get it. We decided to get it anyway. It’s amazing how something like a setback like that Japanese-only rejection can make you more willing to do something.

The salesman wrote out the warranty and showed us the camera. Then he walked us over to a bank of registers. He saw a big line so he took us over to a different bank. I took out my American Express and asked if it was accepted and the girl at the register said yes.

All of a sudden, the girl whipped out a huge bell and yelled “BINGO!”, and then the rest of the workers at the other registers joined in. I had no idea what was going on. I looked over at the salesman who was still next to me, and he said “Congratulations!” I still didn’t know what was going on, and he told me “You do not have to pay.” Andrew and I were shocked. The funny thing is, I didn’t even think to be ecstatic about it because I didn’t even know that such a thing existed. I just stood there with my mouth hanging open.

As we walked out of the store, I laughed and told Andrew “what if we had bought TWO cameras?” But then I realized that it would have taken the salesman an extra minute to fill out the second warranty card, which would have meant someone else would have won the prize. Then I thought about it more and realized how precise our luck had been. What if we hadn’t hung around the camera section for a few minutes feeling dejected? What if we hadn’t had so much trouble flagging down a salesman on the B2 level? What if we hadn’t moved register banks. What if we hadn’t even gone down to the B2 level to get the pen styluses? What if they didn’t take American Express and it took an extra half-second to bust out my Visa?

As we walked back to our hotel thinking about it, we thought of how many people have won that bingo and were pissed that they only were buying something like a pen, or how many Japanese kids dreamt of winning the Bic Camera Bingo, and then how pissed they’d be knowing that some dumb foreigner won it without even knowing it existed.

After that we bought a few bentos and some Shinkansen tickets for Kyoto. For dinner, we had a really fancy Japanese dinner with countless little pieces of things that were meticulously arranged and intensely flavored.

Sweaty in Tokyo

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin at 5:06 am on Sunday, September 10, 2006

It’s super hot and muggy in Tokyo now.  It was in the nineties today and the humidity was extreme.  I shocked myself when I reached back and felt a huge wet spot on my back after carrying a backpack around.

I saw a Japanese wedding today that was held in the lobby of our hotel.  It had a fake snowfall, where fake snowflakes fell while the lights dimmed.  It was odd, yet kind of neat. Didn’t get a picture of it since I thought that taking one would be rude.

I wanted to check out either Rokusaburo Michiba’s or Hiroyuki Sakai’s Tokyo restaurants but I didn’t get to.  I didn’t get to go to Nikko or Hakone either.  I did buy my first C.C. Lemon, but I’m upset that it’s so tough to find.  I also got to visit my first Bic Camera (discount electronic chain).  They had a line that was dedicated solely to DS Lites (they limited to one per person).

Today was fairly productive.  I got my family to have lunch at Tsunahachi, a “famous” tempura place in Shinjuku.  The tempura was pretty solid and since I’m by no means a tempura pro, it was a good experience to try all kinds of things cooked tempura style (types of fish, vegetables, scallops, etc.)  I also got my first chance to order by pointing at plastic food in the window.

We took an overrated cruise up the Sumida river to Asakusa.  Asakusa was cool with the temples and gates and shops, but the big news was that I found a store with Nintendo DS Lites!  Yessssssssssss.  There’s nothing like getting rejected tons of times to up your determination.

“DS Lite? Sold out? Ok…”

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin at 5:07 am on Friday, September 8, 2006

Woke up this morning quite easily.  Being on a late sleeping schedule in LA works perfectly for sleeping on a normal schedule in Japan.  I highly recommend it.

It was raining a little this morning so we went to the Takashimaya Times Square building.  There we had a pretty good lunch.  I ordered the “Japanese style hamburg steak.”  After the restaurant filled up, I noticed that 90% of all customers ordered the American style hamburg steak.  I felt like a fool. My parents liked the food a lot though.  I noticed a really funny tendency that my parents have.  Here, knowing that the people they’re talking to have very very limited English skills, my parents have no ability to simplify their talking.  For instance, if they want to ask if a place takes credit cards, they can’t just pull out the card and point at it and say “ok?” (my preferred method) - they say “excuse me, i was wondering if your store takes credit cards.”  Then they get a blank stare.  Then they repeat it.  Then the blank stare.
After lunch, my dad, being the music fan that he is, saw the HMV Japan store and blew a few hours there.  I spent the time listening to some Jpop hits on the listening stations.  The big albums now are the new ones by Aiko and Yuki.  They’re everywhere.

Then we tried to go to the Shinjuku Gyoen gardens but it was closed.  Instead we got on the subway to Shibuya.  I totally forgot how to use the subway, and because all of the fare signs were in Japanese, I didn’t know how much to put on a ticket.  I ended up guessing (I paid a few yen more than the lowest price) and it turned out to be practically right on.  I found an English fare map in Shibuya and took a photo to reference it.
IMG_4402
We got to Shibuya and I took a photo with the Hachiko statue because I actually find Hachiko’s story to be really touching.  In Shibuya, my dad realized a lifelong dream by getting to go to a Tower Records in Tokyo.  Then he went to HMV Japan.  In the meantime, we also found a cool soccer store (http://www.footcircle.com) with the biggest collection of Corinthians figures I’ve ever seen.  I also went to McDonalds and bought a Smurf-sized soda.

I found a big electronics store in Shibuya and tried to get a few Nintendo DS Lites.  They were totally sold out.  I got determined (I don’t take rejection well) and then tried to go to Akihabara.  The problem was, most of the stores were closed, and the ones that were still open were sold out.  I even accidentally went into an anime porn store because they had an XBOX 360 in the window.

Back in Shinjuku,we got another Italian food dinner that was pretty good.  Then, with our really tired feet, we walked back to the hotel.  Then Andrew and I went to the convenience store to get some drinks that included a Pocari Sweat and a “Prime Time” (higher class Asahi beer).  Btw, Coronas here are sold with a pack of “lime syrup.
Tomorrow we’re moving to central Tokyo but not before I take a shot at some of the local electronics stores.  I WILL find a DS Lite in either enamel navy or jet black dammit.

Lastly, I just love how some Japanese signs (this one on an elevator door) don’t need any words.
